An integral aspect of Papanui High School life is the wide array of leadership opportunities offered to senior students. Each year, a select team of Year 13 students is appointed to the position of Prefect following a rigorous process of nomination and staff endorsement. From this group, Head Prefects are selected to lead the student body. Leadership is further distributed through the Student Council system, covering portfolios such as Service, Sports, Arts, and Culture, and within the Tira (House) leadership teams. Uniquely, the school’s vertical form structure issues a standing challenge to all Year 13 students to act as Tuakana (mentors) and positive role models for the younger students in their Te Huinga (form) classes.
These student leaders serve as advocates for their peers. They are also the public face of the school at significant community events, such as ANZAC Day services and Open Evenings, while also driving internal culture through Tira competitions and Service Council initiatives. Holding these offices grants students deep insight into the responsibilities of governance and teamwork, fostering a sense of service and civic duty that prepares them for life beyond school.
